Mutualism was created over lockdown in 2020 through a remote collaboration between 14 multidisciplinary NYX artists and features spoken word artist MA.MOYO.

Responding to interdependence as a necessity negotiated by conflict and compassion, MA.MOYO’s spoken word transformed into a meditation through nature. Each natural element, awakening different physical senses with an invitation to align and connect through a central mantra:
“meet me in the middle”.

NYX singers created short loops and recordings from their individual studio spaces, using each other’s creations as sources for development and inspiration. Vochlea Dubler, VocalSynth software, stethoscope contact mics, hardware, Ableton software enabled singers to expand their capacity for creating connective, human soundscapes and bridging the gap between the organic voice and synthetic modulation. NYX created the structure of the 11:11 minute piece, using elements of these recordings, along with new manipulations, live instrumentation, drones and collective harmonic fluctuations.

NYX commissioned 3 producers making waves in experimental electronic & club music spaces to remix Mutualism from a library of open-source audio. Anna Wall, Deena Abdelwahed and LCY take a different approach to embodiment and consciousness in 3 diverse tracks, each responding to a different natural element.

Mutualism was released by NYX Collective Records across all streaming platforms & Bandcamp on Thursday 18 November 2021Mutualism was created with the generous support of Arts Council England and Help Musicians UK, PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music.

Following its premiere at Rewire Digital Festival in April 2021, NYX released a digital audio-visual experience created by Motion Designer and Animator Nick Cobby with 360 sound design by Peter Rice. Nick’s designs came from within the creation of the original track, sending visual references to inform the composition, reacting to early demos with responsive colours, movements and shapes. Filmed while exploring the mountains and forests in his new hometown Tepoztlán in central Mexico, the video was created for audiences to experience in 360, travelling through waterfalls, earthy plains, expansive cloud clusters and rainbow prisms.
